1933–40 profesor uniwersytetu w Strasburgu, 1945–47 — w São Paulo (Brazylia), 1947–58 — w Chicago, od 1958 — Institute for Advanced Study w Princeton (USA); od 1982 członek francuskiej Akademii Nauk; współzał. grupy Bourbaki; wniósł wkład w rozwój licznych dziedzin współcz. matematyki, m.in. teorii liczb, geometrii algebraicznej, 9 teorii grup; Foundation of Algebraic Geometry (1946), Elliptic Functions According to Eisenstein and Kronecker (1976).
